Free Days out for all!
The South of Devon has an abundance of things to do whilst you are on holiday. Having two young children of our own we know how difficult it can be to keep everyone entertained and not breaking the bank. Luckily there are numerous days out that won’t cost you a penny, apart from ice creams and coffees! We have put together our top ten things to do. However there are more! There are also farmers markets in Brixham, Dartmouth and Totnes as well as other seasonal festivals that happen throughout the year.
- The Daymark. Take a walk along the track from Bownstone car park to see the Daymark and onto the coastguard lookout. There are great views of the coastline. Why not take a picnic and walk the South West Coastal Path stopping at one of the many secluded beaches.
- Berry Head. Walk along the cliffs and enjoy the Nature Reserve, lighthouse and forts. As well as the spectacular views across Torbay. There is an excellent café for a pit stop!
- Crabbing from the Harbour wall in Brixham and Dartmouth or head down to Stoke Gabriel for a quiet retreat and beautiful views.
- Brixham Heritage Museum. Learn about the history of Brixham the Mayflower and the heritage fishing fleet.
- Cockington Country Park. In Torquay, the country park including, lakes and woodlands and rose gardens are free to walk around. There is also a play area for children. The village itself is on of the most densely thatched villages in England. This year there is a sculpture trail to follow around the grounds, until September.
- Occombe Farm is a working farm and you can see an array of animals. Free to visit and walk the 2km nature trails. They also have an array of chargeable activities.
- The House of Marbles – A lovely half day exploring the history of the glass works at Bovey Tracey. Watch giant marble runs and glass blowing. Free entry, but there is a large gift shop and café!
- Stover Country Park – Combine this with a visit to the House of Marbles. There is a charge for the car park, but you can then enjoy 114 acres of woodland, heathland and grassland. There is even a cycle track to follow.
- Dartmoor National Park. Explore the beauty of the moor and there is 368 square miles of it! Enough space to escape from everyone and find your own piece of tranquillity.
- Slapton Ley. This is the largest natural lake in the South West of England. This reserve is South of Dartmouth, separated from the sea by a shingle bar. Follow the trail around the lake which has reedbeds, marshes and woodland habitats. Free events take place at certain times of the year.
