Birds You’ll See at Nethway Farm
We’re lucky to have a variety of birds right here at Nethway Farm, from garden favourites to rare sightings! Keep your eyes peeled for:
- Buzzards & Kestrels – Look up and you might see these majestic birds of prey soaring above the fields.
- Barn Owls & Tawny Owls – If you’re out at dusk, listen for their calls and see if you can spot them gliding over the farm.
- Robins, Blue Tits & Great Tits – These colourful little birds love our hedgerows and bird feeders.
- House Martins & Swallows – In the warmer months, they swoop over the farm catching insects.
- Woodpeckers – The unmistakable drumming of a Great Spotted Woodpecker can sometimes be heard in the trees around the farm.
- Heron & Kingfisher – Often seen by our pond, patiently waiting to catch their next meal.
Other Wildlife at Nethway Farm
While staying with us, you might also spot some other special creatures, including:
- Hedgehogs – Often seen in the evenings rustling through the hedgerows.
- Foxes & Badgers – If you’re really lucky (and quiet!), you might spot one at dawn or dusk.
- Bats – As the sun sets, keep an eye out for bats flitting around catching insects, including the rare Greater Horseshoe Bat, which can sometimes be seen in the area.
- Deer – Occasionally seen in nearby woodlands or grazing in the fields at dawn.
Where to Go for More Wildlife Spotting
Bird Hide on the Path to Man Sands
For a peaceful birdwatching experience, head to the secluded bird hide along the path to Man Sands. This is a fantastic spot to quietly observe a variety of birds in their natural habitat.
Berry Head National Nature Reserve
This coastal headland is a haven for wildlife! Seals are often spotted in the water below, and if you’re lucky, you might even see dolphins or porpoises.
Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve
The largest natural freshwater lake in the South West, home to rare birds, dragonflies, and even otters!
A must-visit for birdwatchers hoping to see the rare cirl bunting, as well as spectacular coastal views.
Dart Estuary & River Trips
Take a boat trip along the River Dart for a chance to see herons, kingfishers, and even seals basking on the banks.
How to Make the Most of Your Wildlife Spotting
- Go early or late – Many animals are more active at dawn and dusk.
- Bring binoculars – Some birds and animals like to keep their distance.
- Be quiet and patient – The best wildlife encounters happen when we blend into nature.
